Cats!

Some people just don't like cats. I'm not one of them.

I got thinking about this when I went on a hike up the ridge behind our house. Jake, our dog, was with me and so was Majik (Krista's cat).

My grandmother, Nanny, loved her cats. She had Whiskers, Mitchell, Truman and more. Each had their own special personality and story. When Whiskers arrived, it just so happened that my brother had shaved his face and cut his long hair ... so Whiskers got his name. Of the three cats, Whiskers seemed to rule the roost. He was direct and dominant. If he wanted petting, he came over and you had better pet him or get a tiny scratch for your lack of attention. Truman, was ... well, Truman was cool. He was the jazz player going along to his own tune while still in harmony with the rest of the band. Mitchell, though the biggest cat, was afraid of everything. Mitchell's fur was so thick that you could have made a wig out of one brushing!

Growing up, my sister had a cat named Binky. I don't remember much about her except that she caught a rabbit bigger than herself and dragged it home .... still alive. She had 3 kittens who got the names: Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod. Blinkin and Nod found new homes and we ended up keeping Winkin. Winkin was probably the meanest cat I'd ever encountered and only had a soft spot for Dad. I can imagine that her growing up with us kids made a deep imprint on her personality!

For Kathy and I, we've had our share of cats, too. We started out with Oscar and Felix thus named because of how opposite they were. Oscar was relaxed, handsome and athletic while Felix was particular, peculiar, and a bit clumsy. In those days, Kathy slept on a fold-up couch in a studio apartment. Coming home from work, she wondered where Felix was. She called and called but heard nothing. Finally, she heard a muffled meow from inside the couch. When Kathy left for work, she made the bed and folded it up, the cat remained in the couch ... all day!

Eventually, we had a cat named Penny. She was our first calico cat with browns, white and black colors. She and Benji lived with us in Somerville, MA. I sat on the stoop of our Cameron Ave. apartment and watched as a large Great Dane came up the street. He walked slowly, obviously headed someplace, but alone and without a leash. Penny, a petite cat lay on the sidewalk. Benjie, the biggest cat I've ever seen ran around the back. Cameron Ave. is a wide street. It has room for parking cars on both sides and cars moving in both directions. It is also not a side street. It is one of the main cut-thrus between Mass Ave. and Davis Square. The dog lumbered along, looked up at Penny and she looked at him. She did not get up ... just a head lift. He crossed the street, walked up passed her and then crossed back. Penny put her head back down and fell asleep in the sun. I wondered if they had had a prior encounter of if the dog knew about cats that just don't move from the sidewalk!
Callie was also a Calico cat. She enriched our lives in Bellingham, MA and in Oak Hill, VA. As a youngster, she occasionally caught other animals. Tucker was young and one spring morning, Callie proudly brought a dead mouse to our back door. Tucker saw it and I wasn't sure how he would react. Would he be scarred for life? I used to worry about these things as if I had some sort of control over how the kids would turn out. Ha! You only think you have control! Anyway, we made a game of it and I suggested that Tucker count the things that Callie caught thinking that she might catch 3 or 4 over the summer. It was as if Callie heard me. The challenge was on! 45 dead and not so dead animals later, the summer was finally over and Tucker stopped counting them. Callie caught everything including mice, chipmonks, birds, and even squirrels.

Then there is Majik. She is another breed of creature. Her legend is one of grace, beauty, and sleek athleticism. Although when she is with Krista, she seems to get clumsy! We were looking for a dog and got Dusty, Majik came along with the deal. We were told that she was 6 weeks old and male. A trip to the Vet showed that she was 6 months old and female. She was very small for her age. She came along with the dog and was brought up by Krista. Krista cuddled her, hugged her, and squeezed her and sometimes I feared for the animal's life! Just one of too many times that I have been wrong because a bond was created there that never fails to impress me.

Majik grew up with Jake and Dusty. She would run by the dogs, swat one or the other and they would begin a chase. Generally, Jake would chase Majik and Dusty would chase Jake. After a short while, Majik would jump up on the couch and watch as Jake kept running and Dusty kept chasing. Sometimes, if they slowed down, she would jump back into the fray and get them running again. If the dogs were running around the house barking and chasing each other, you knew that the black cat asleep on top of the couch probably started the ruckus.

Much like Penny, Majik is not one to back down to a dog ... no matter the size. There are many stories of her encounters with dogs. She used to like to go along when Kathy would walk our dogs around our neighborhood in Oak Hill. As the dogs were on the sidewalk, Majik was often walking through the neighbor's front yards. Kathy met a gentleman with a Pointer dog. After the dogs sniffed each other, the Pointer noticed Majik and approached. "You might not want to do that," cautioned Kathy. The man's response still makes me chuckle about misplaced assumptions. "Oh, don't worry! My dog won't hurt your cat."

Kathy responded that she wasn't worried about the cat but by then it was too late. It wasn't a flurry of activity or even fur flying. It was a well placed swipe of the poor Pointer's nose that caused him to run back to his owner with a yelp. Majik sat there and calmly licked her paw.

Majik is a rare cat that when Krista calls her, she comes. Sometimes she even comes when I call her ... sometimes.
So as I headed out of the back yard, I expected her to turn and go back to the house. Up the hill we went through the "pine grove" and out onto the plateau. Majik stayed with Jake and I. Jake's cataract continues to give him depth perception issues and at one point, Majik was actually there helping him climb over the hills and rocks. I was further amazed as we climbed up to the top of the rock overlooking all of Hawaii Kai. She came right along! She sat there looking out over the water, the mountains and the clouds.

It made me wonder what she was looking at ... what she was thinking.
As we headed home, once again, she became Jake's seeing-eye-cat. She led the way and he followed her.

She is a great cat but she is more than that. She is our companion, our friend, and our confidant. She is always there when we need her most. She is a character in our lives who just make this journey so rich, so full, and so worth living.
Enjoy the characters in your life!
with love ... Johnnie-jack

A Most Active Crew

Donna, Preston, Gilliam and Rich came to visit a week ago. They get the prize! They are the most active crew to visit us so far. Wow, these folks were up at the crack of dawn even after they adjusted to the time zone. I think the 2nd or 3rd day they were here they raced down and up a muddy trail as part of the Hawaiian Ultra Runing Team ... yeah, that spells HURT! Would you do that? I wouldn't, but they did. They came back muddy and worn out ... ok, almost worn out as it seemed like they were up and doing something else that very afternoon.

After much effort, we got them to relax a little and go to the beach. Below is Rich coming out of the water and Donna is reading.

We climbed the ridge behind the house and then they climbed it several more times! The boys climbed up Shark's Tooth as well. It was windy up there. In the distance in the picture below, you can see our destination.

Donna grips on to Rich to ensure she doesn't fall off.

Each night, I'd come home from work and be enthralled with their descriptions of their day. Hiking here or the Arizona there. Then we'd play MarioCart or the Wii or a board game. Rich was generally asleep by 8:30 ...
On Saturday, we went to what is fast becoming my favorite Oahu hike, Palolo Valley. We hiked 5 of the 7 waterfalls and they were flowing nicely. Below Preston uses a rope to make his way down a cascading waterfall.
Donna edges her way to the base of the waterfall.

Preston takes Gilliam's picture as he wades acroos the pool of the 2nd waterfall.
Preston and Gilliam start up the first set of cascading waterfalls.
Rich brought to light a new term for me ... scurry! The sisters have always moved fast but the term scurry really covers what they do. To see them in a kitchen is like watching chipmunks scurry about. I'll certainly use that term when Cindy comes to visit in a few weeks.
Below, they ham it up by the palm trees.

It was a great visit and always great to see family. Donna also wins the prize as our first "return visitor" ... not that we were counting but she was! We were very happy to have her and the family come out ... you too Rich!

Gary and Ricia Visit

Hi all!

Kathy, Krista, Tucker and I were very fortunate to have Gary and Ricia visit us from Northern Virginia. What a fantastic time we had laughing and joking around!

We enjoyed Kailua Beach Park where the water was warm and inviting.
What a cute couple!
We played POUNCE with Nino & Krista and surprise of all surprises ... Krista won! Ok, not much of a surprise ...

They came to Hawaii 25 years ago when they got married. They visited Oahu and stayed a long time on Maui. On their return visit, they stayed on Maui for several days and visited us for a few days that seemed like 15 minutes! Wow, talk about time flying by! We looked forward to their visit and bam! gone! But, that is the sad part of the visit and now we can look forward to the next we see them either in NoVA or here in HI.

We brought them to the winds of the Pali Lookout.

The jagged peaks beckoned. Maybe I'll climb this some day ... if I do and live through it, Kathy will kill me!

Tucker, Gary and I climbed the trail out the back of the house. Gary had hyper extended his leg playing an octogenarian the week before. He claimed it was a 30 something club pro but I don't believe him. In any regard, he was game and we headed up the hill.

Despite an injured leg, Gary practically raced up the hill.

Halfway up the hill, Gary asked for water. We had only one. Then he started giving Tucker and I grief for not being properly prepared! We all laughed.

Gary: What kind of trail guides are you? No water. No trail bars or candy bars? No band aids?
At the next rest stop, Gary looks out over the beautiful views.

Gary: Wow, what a view! Ahh Crap! Johnny-Jack, I forgot my camera. Can you take a picture for me?

John: What kind of tourist are you?

;-)

Ok, why is this pretty woman dressed like this and what is this guy doing?

We went to an overlook of Honolulu and as GREAT FORTUNE would have it, a dance team was getting pictures taken for a fund-raising calendar! The young women were gorgeous and scantily clad.

Gary: What a beautiful view!
John: I wish I had my good camera!

We had a grand adventure climbing through the volcano tube and watching the surf crash on the shore. We had a fantastic dinner at BlueWater Grill celebrating their anniversary. Gary kicked my butt in tennis (again!) and wanted to doubles against ... anybody. I thought I had hurt my back but it turned out that I was dehydrated ... no water, no trailbars, no candy bars ... what kind of a host am I??

It was an action packed weekend and somehow we also found time to relax. Unfortunately, it was over in a blink and we had a very hard time driving home after watching them join the throngs at security check in.

We miss you all and if you have not come to visit - hurry up!

Love

Johnny-Jack

Waterlogged!

Hi All,

Kathy and I have been getting into this snorkeling thing lately. I don't know how long it will last but I believe that my fingers now have permanent waterloggedridges!
We have been so fortunate to live so close to Hanauma Bay where the fish are abundant and the sea turtles now know Kathy personally. Yes, Kathy refers to them as "my sea turtles."
She does seem to have a knack for finding them. I have been taking advantage of my father's day present ... a relatively inexpensive underwater camera.
The last few weekends, we've been abandoned all sense of reason and ventured to the North Shore for snorkeling at Shark's Cove. Are there any sharks at Sharks Cove? I haven't seen one and don't expect to!
The "little guy" below was about 3 1/2 feet across!

This sea turtle was enjoying lunch off the reef at Sharks Cove.

This picture is a bit hard to see but it is a picture of about 500 little blue fish!

When we least expected it, one of our friends came cruising up over this rock to say "hello!"

Kathy took this video clip of me swimming down about 15 feet.

In addition to the snorkeling, we've frequented Bellows Air Station beach. It is a gorgeous beach with tons of privacy and 3 to 5 foot waves that just cruise in from the outer reef. It has become one of our favorite beaches as it is only 20 minutes away and stunningly beautiful.

Below, Krista drags Kathy out on the boogie board.

Jeanne & Nathan Visit

I looked forward to their arrival with great anticipation. It was like Christmas in April ... we waited and waited and then they came and suddenly ... they were gone too quick! I guess that is the way it is when I am looking forward from event to event and I live my life looking forward to the next big event.

Jeanne and Nathan arrived on Monday afternoon and were picked up by Tucker. Tired from the long flight (oops, did I say that?) ... wait ... wait ... the flight was easy and simple and was over in no time!! Anybody convinced? I didn't think so ... oh well, cat's out of the bag that the flights here are tough, especially from the east coast. They stayed up as late as they could and then crashed in the spare bedroom.
Kathy took them shopping, they went to spitting cave, and toured the large and dangerous waves of Sandy's Beach. Jeanne worried about Nathan getting swept out to sea but Tucker was there to jump in at a moment's notice.

We watched the moon rise over the Pacific and looked at the craters through the telescope.
While the normal tourists were looking in another direction, we explored a lava tube. It took us under a small highway and led us to a cove where the waves crashed on centuries old lava rock. We carefully climbed the rock and enjoyed the roar of the waves while watching the native fishermen cast their lines.

Nathan is a fish. He could or maybe should live in the water! He swam everywhere and anywhere and especially enjoyed the waves. I could see him from the beach and watch a wave crash over his head, his body tumble through the surf, Jeanne would look concerned and then Nathan would get up and do it again with a laugh!
We had shave ice ... and more shave ice ... it was very good!

Tucker and I took Jeanne on the Pu'u Ohia hike high above Honolulu and Waikiki. The view from there is spectacular while setting the hiker far enough off the beaten path to be into the deep woods and mountain tops of Oahu. The bamboo forest was incredible and I think Jeanne really enjoyed the call of the wild birds as they followed us through the woods.

The turtles seemed to be favorites for Nathan. We saw them at Sea Life Park. We saw them on the North Shore beaches and it was especially exciting when one or two actually swam by us while at Kailua beach!

Sea Life Park was excellent. We went there for a Luau but got treated to seals, dolphins, penguins, dancers and singers ...

Sea Life Park also included demonstration dancing from many different cultures including these warriers painted up like New Zealand natives.

It certainly was a busy week and unfortunately it was over before we knew it. As I look back on it today, I remember most the laughter and the fun as the whole family sat around the dining room tables and played Pounce or I Doubt It (the other name shall no longer be spoken!)
Peace!
